Building a Haynes Roadster – Introduction

This is the first post in a series documenting my build of a Haynes Roadster Sports Car. Many people would refer to this as a Kit Car and would be right in doing so apart from the fact that this particular example was not built from a kit and was in fact build completely from scratch using a set of plans.

The initial build took fifteen months from a pile of 1” and ¾” 16SWG mild steel box section and a selection of aluminium alloy sheets to a completed road legal vehicle.

The car was first built using a Honda Super Blackbird motorcycle engine and gearbox producing 175HP. This was later replaced with a Honda S2000 engine and gearbox producing approximately 250HP after a slight technical malfunction involving the number 3 cylinders connecting rod exiting the stage via a cavernous hole in the crankcase.  Thankfully no one was in the passenger seat at the time or they would have been rained on by 100 degC oil.

This is the car with the Blackbird engine shortly after completion.
